The Expat's Lament
From Jeweled Concrete, 1 year ago Similar articles
I can already see the scene from today in a faded photograph style in my mind.I had brunch with a friend who was visiting for a night from Geneva, where she moved to from Munich back in September. Four of the old crew joined us - two of whom are already in their final week in Munich themselves and the other two who are actively looking to move on by next year. What can I say' Almost everyone I was friends with a year ago has now moved on from Munich. A table at brunch that was filled with...

I recently friended a UK based American expat named Leigh who was visiting Paris on a extended trip. We hit it off from the start. She has a cute blog and an even cuter daugheter named Lois who Maximilien took a liking to immediately. Lois doesn't speak French but that didn't keep her from making fast friends with Max. You would never believe the conversations these two had a mismash of French and English and lots of laughing and wrestling. Lois can keep up with the boys for sure....

When we lived in California we used to lament about the four seasons there...mud slide, earthquake, fire and riot. Â I guess you can call this is our second fire season here in Belize. We saw this one burning in the distance as we drove home from Hattieville earlier this week:As we drew closer this is the view we had of the fire:This time last year I can remember flames licking at the edge of the asphalt as we drove on the highway bringing Nathan home from the airport. Â Some of the...
The perfect tribute to Václav Havel : the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent
From Empty Nest Expat, 2 weeks ago, Similar articles
The Goddess of Democracyfrom Tiananmen Squarecirca 1989Václav Havel and the Czechs inspired my 'Empty Nest Expat' adventure. I knew people who could elect a playwright as President were different in a way I couldn't define than me and my countrymen. The Czech Republic seemed like such a delightfully highbrow learned society. I wanted to learn all about the Czechs by moving overseas and seeing what they were like.To this day, I'm inspired by Václav Havel. This week, I...

HORN PLEASE
From Delhi Bound, 3 weeks ago, Similar articles
I'm becoming just a wee bit obsessed with capturing all that India has to offer.  Color. Signage. I imagine what some of my photographs would look like, framed and matted on a wall. I wonder how I would ever choose amongst the thousands and thousands of photos that I have taken over the past three years.  Halfway through my stay here in Delhi I started the Fading Ladies group with 5 other expat women. We came from...
Losing the plot
From Not wrong, just different, 3 weeks ago, Similar articles
I thought I ought to post something so that you know I'm ok after the trauma of the tornado. I don't want you to think I've lost the plot.Speaking of which, I have read on more than one American-in-Britain expat blog how much they enjoy that phrase. 'Lost the plot'. I agree. It's a splendid phrase, and one I've stopped using since being here. I've lost the 'lost the plot'.Of course I'm also in
Beautify your home with plants
From New Life in KL!, 3 weeks ago, Similar articles
For those looking for plants, orchids and other planting accessories (and necessities), you can try this huge place at Petaling Jaya which houses a lot of different small nurseries. I went there to buy organic soil, pots, orchid, and other flowering plants. Price seem reasonable and if you are an expat like me you may run into some communication problems as some of them employ non-English speaking Malaysians. Though that didn't stop me from spending an hour (and money!) at that place.Hope...
Taxes and Toilets
From Ya' All Right?, 4 weeks ago, Similar articles
A bit of a warning - I've ranted about taxes before (quite a few times, I believe) and I'm about to do it again. It's tax time, and that stinks doubly bad when you're an expat. Thank goodness for KPMG, as I would never be able to do my taxes on my own. Not only are they long and complicated, but because I'm an expat, I'm unable to file Federal taxes on-line. That means a trip to the post-office, one of my least favourite things to do. How long is the return' ...

After a lovely long week-end visit from our youngest Grand-parents for Catholic Easter we are now heading off to Vienna for a short week with the kids.the four of them testing our new sand-bench Emma and Pata taking a break in the shade at the bicycle parkIt was great; I loved watching the kids enjoy every second of having their grand-parents here - I wish it was something that expat life allowed more of - and the change of schedule to the sunny summer rhythm with drinks, food, restaurants,...
Making Expat Friends through Internations Expat Social Network

Friends having fun! That's how we spell it: Y-M-C-AHow was anyone an expat before the Internet' That was when people really left home and immersed themselves completely in another country. No TV shows from home, no news from home, only snail mail, and a new culture where English was not the global language it is today. That was expat commitment on a whole other level.Enjoying new Internations friends in TurkeyGratefully, these days, the Internet provides us not only the...
