Real Life Beckons....Going back to work
From Africa Expat Wives Club, Today, Similar articles
These intermittent posts are all related to our house build, however I am aware that life continues beyond the banging and the shifting walls of ours. (*Okay, I can't help it. Right now they are doing the roof. I am fully expecting the leg of a builder to appear through the roof above my head any minute now. The ceiling boards are shifting ? I feel like I am on the set of Alien or some horror movie. A minute ago there was the most almighty crash ? do I have an ambulance number...

I've seen little houses like this one all over the internet. I absolutely love the free motion sewing style. To me free motion sewing has a bit of an abandoned feeling... like you're throwing the idea of perfection aside and...
The house is taking shape!

? The trees are still standing. Note the wobbly/homemade ladder. ?  ? looking forward to having coffee on the balcony off our new bedroom ? ? old kitchen downstairs, new one on the left seems huge and caverous ? The house/palazzo is taking shape, very exciting! Enormous crashes and bangs going on around my ears as I type - but no death or injury yet'! (We are all getting good at scaling up wobbly ladders that don't look to be able to stand our weight).
Poem for today

A friend was complaining bitterly on FB the other day. Â Her teenaged son was being made to memorize tracts from "The Tempest" by his English teacher. Â In the chorus of sympathy and commiseration by her friends I was the only dissenting voice. Â I suggested memorization was not a bad thing for children. Â I remember in my high school years memorizing a lot of Shakespearean speeches, paragraphs from the set work novels, poems, sonnets, and since I was still god-fearing and going...
English class

I finally picked up enough courage to visit one of the orphanages and I'm glad I did. Even though it is school holidays this week many kids, actually only teenage girls, showed up for the English class given by volunteers. One of the ladies led the lesson for the first 30 minutes after which each volunteer worked with a small group of kids to help them practice what they have just learned. It was a lot of fun! PS: On our way home Bernardo took a wrong exit and slightly panicked when we...
Gone forever

They always come in teams those maintenance guys hanging all over the place doing all type of jobs around the house we've never even asked for. Last week after they replaced the blinds and cleaned the air conditioning my small purse with vintage jewelries got missing. Our shipment should arrive to Luanda in the end of May and our house is still very empty so it was easy to go quickly through all our stuff. I searched for it again and again still hoping I will find it somewhere. Then I spoke...
Le Château de Canisy

At the beginning of March I got a phone call that changed everything. I was a day away from starting a new work contract and was thrilled to be done with the tediousness of updating my CV, writing lettres de motivation and thinking about what to say during a French job interview. We had recently moved into an adorable rental house and were feeling settled in Normandy. So my immediate reaction was thanks, but no thanks. A few days later they called again and explained more of what the job...
Brown's Siding Cafe in the Blue Mountains

The last days of Autumn are coming to an end and I can feel the winter fast approaching. The mornings are way cooler than normal and it gets really cold inside the house. It's time to get the heater out. Mind you the sun is still lovely and temperatures still reach 23 degrees C. The leaves are so beautiful right now and this is the perfect time for the Blue Mountains which despite their name can be quite golden and red in Autumn. We stopped at a cafe, the Brown's Siding, for some delightful...
Cookie monster

…that’s what we call our new precious pug, Cookie. She is an adorable munchkin who is like a baby discovering the world at large, or rather my parents’ house in Singapore. My family thinks she is the “doggiest” dog we have ever owned. She plays fetch, loves chewing on bones, chases her tail, barks at strangers (and the TV and when anyone sneezes), jumps onto anyone’s lap, gives away friendly licks to any kind-looking human toes and has an insatiable...

I recently friended a UK based American expat named Leigh who was visiting Paris on a extended trip. We hit it off from the start. She has a cute blog and an even cuter daugheter named Lois who Maximilien took a liking to immediately. Lois doesn't speak French but that didn't keep her from making fast friends with Max. You would never believe the conversations these two had a mismash of French and English and lots of laughing and wrestling. Lois can keep up with the boys for sure....
