Deb Roy: The Birth of a Word
From Here There and Everywhere, 5 month ago Similar articles
Come back when you have some time – you’ll need about twenty minutes to watch this TED video about communication. I love this – but then you know I am a word nerd, and I love the way concepts are born and grow. Computers have aided language analysis and taken it to lengths that were previously inconceivable. First, Deb Roy shows – with videos, graphs and cloud analysis – how his son learned to speak his first word. He goes from there to what I would call...

ninjin shirishiri
From Our Adventures in Japan, 5 days ago, Similar articles
Having Okinawan ties, I am always interesting in learning more about their food culture. On a recent television show, I learned about this dish...ninjin shirishiri (literally grated carrots). Shirishiri is the okinawan word for surisuri which means to grate. This dish is so easy to make, of course you can doctor it up with some salt or shoyu if it is too bland for you. some olive oil 1.5
Don Jose's, A Bright Spot in Decatur, TX
From Here There and Everywhere, 1 weeks ago, Similar articles
The morning drive is interesting, as we leave Interstate 40 and cut across Texas headed toward Dallas-Fort Worth. The road is fast, and cuts through cattle ranches, farms, ranches and some deserted towns. By noon, we are more than ready for a stop, and decide to try to find something in Decatur. We don’t want same-old, we want local, and AdventureMan spots Don Jose’s. Lunch was good, and you are just going to have to take my word for it because I forgot to take any photos. Don...
The Importance of "No"
From Living in Egypt, 1 weeks ago, Similar articles
The word "No" carries a lot of interesting baggage in Egyptian life. One of the things that I often tell newcomers to Egypt is to remember that in a strange way telling someone "no" or giving unpleasant information is almost considered rude. There are millions of apophrycal tales of asking directions in Egypt that detail how the askers ended up traveling many miles in strange places at the direction of well-meaning people who simply don't want to disappoint the askers by telling them that...

Gemma in my lap and Gioia looking on. As some of you know, we had a miracle happen here two weeks ago. Two miracles actually, and their names are Gemma and Gioia. Our goat Pasqualina gave birth to these two lovelies, which you can read more about at Goat Berries; containing my excitement, happiness, and joy has been impossible ? as evidenced by my plethora of postings of photos and videos. I even gave the goaties names that showed just how wonderful I found their arrivals to be: Gemma...
"creamy" herbed tofu dressing
From Our Adventures in Japan, 1 weeks ago, Similar articles
I tried a new recipe yesterday for "creamy" herbed tofu dressing. The thing that makes this dressing "creamy" is the tofu. The original recipe uses the word "fresh" in its title, but I didn't have the fresh herbs listed, so I used dried. Here is the original recipe: from "Moosewood Restaurant Daily Special" makes 3/4 cup-1 cup "Creamy" Fresh Herbed Tofu Dressing 6 to 7 ounces firm tofu (1/2

Victoire!

Feeling kind of proud of myself right now. I just successfully explained the concept of "sarcasm" (in French, un sarcasme) to my 10-year-old step-son. When he said, "Oh, it's like a mensonge (a lie)", I elaborated to explain the distinction between a lie and a sarcasm (because granted, it's a bit of a fine line). With examples. It's rare that I can explain an actual new CONCEPT to him in French (versus a mere translation of a word). I can't even help him with his homework...
