Plants and people

From Gweipo , Today, Similar articles

Plants are the darndest things.  I've never thought of myself as having green fingers, and in fact I know pretty much that I don't.  Part of it is an appreciation for nice gardens / pot plants etc combined with a complete lack of interest in how they get from point seed to point beauty.  And all the details in-between.On our walk yesterday my son was reminiscing about our little garden in Hong Kong.  Our little cement garden, with it's couple of meters of planter in which we...

You are fifteen, poor, black, and motherless as this book opens. Dad drinks, and isn’t around much. You are the only girl in a family of brothers. Having sex is no big deal, and there is one guy you really like, Manny. Your oldest brother’s pit bull is having puppies, and you are having trouble with throwing up most of what you eat, especially every morning. Dad says a hurricane is coming, but he’s said that before, no big deal. As this book opens, it has the feel of a myth...

Beauty and marketing

From Gweipo , 3 days ago, Similar articles

Sometimes it is possible to get things just horribly wrong.  My dear children and husband gave me the luxury of a facial yesterday morning as a mother's day gift.  90 minutes of pampering (I can't remember when last I had a facial).  It was great.  But then after, the beautician sat me down and did the hard sales talk on me.  Was I aware that I had wrinkles.  Well, duh, shock horror, I'm 46, if I didn't there would be something rather un-natural about the matter....

Michael the Movie star!!!

From Life as we know it, 3 days ago, Similar articles

At work, Michael and his colleagues did a safety awareness video. Basically, it speaks for itself : promoting safety at work in order to go back safe, healthy and in one piece to the things you enjoy doing. There are 2 kite surfers in this video and Michael is the kite surfer in the black rash vest and black shorts, with no hat on. http://player.vimeo.com/external/39409060.sd.mp4?s=95120ade5cef72793dbf3131c6939979

More Marais

More Marais

From Frenchless in France, 1 weeks ago, Similar articles

I took a lot of photos on that sunny day in the Marais-it rhymes. Love this window. This lady looked so fashionable with her black outfit with accents of orange. The garden in the Musee Carnavalet-it’s free by the way. And there’s a victory angel there as well. Place des Vosges was full of people enjoying the sun. This is one park where people are allowed on the grass.

Out of the nest

From A New Life In Costa Rica, 1 weeks ago, Similar articles

The black cowled oriole (Icterus prosthemelas) babies have hatched and left the nest. Mom and dad have been bringing them around the yard and feeding them the past week or so. Yesterday they began eating from the banana racks by themselves. This particular bird family has three babies. At one...

She should know that ALL PhD Dissertations are basically "Irrelevant" and will be only read by a few people and that's how it works!

From Mama(e) in Translation, 1 weeks ago, Similar articles

I'm not a reader of the Chronicle of Higher Ed [after all, one has to pay the subscription to read most content], I only read when colleagues or blogger friends provide links in their blogs or on facebook (I'm not on twitter anymore), so I'm not really familiar with Naomi Schaefer Riley's columns and/or her qualifications. Two days ago, Laura linked to this piece by Riley's, provocatively titled "The Most Persuasive Case for Eliminating Black Studies' Just Read the Dissertations" and,...
