Berlingaccio and surviving the snow

Berlingaccio and surviving the snow

From Over the Tuscan Stove, 1 month ago, Similar articles

When I first came to Italy, it was in September of 1984. That winter was one of the coldest and snowiest winters, which caused the olive trees to freeze and we lost thousands of trees which then sprouted back up from the trunks. This year may be worse than that winter of 1985. We were blocked in the house for 10 days ( we don't have chains for our car) and lost our running water for 4 days. Not fun! But, we did have electricity and heat. The pantry was full and we survived. We were hit...

Discovering Puglia- Again

From Over the Tuscan Stove, 5 month ago, Similar articles

Each trip I make down to Puglia, makes me want more.  The Trulli, small cone-shaped homes looking like something from J.R. Tolkien. Ancient olive trees with hollows in their huge trunks. One almost expects to see hobbits or trolls. one of the many abandoned Trulli homes no, I am not thinking " a little fixer-upper". been there done that! ancient olive trees Driving around the countryside,  the stone walls create a sharp contrast with the deep rich red soil. fields and...

Help your mum clean out her loft. Yes. Truly.Mum's loft turned out to be quite organised on investigation, but there was still quite a lot of stuff up there. You know. Loft stuff. And the government want to contribute towards the cost of having it properly insulated, so down the stuff had to come. Husband did a valiant job, descending boxes, trunks, suitcases, parcels wrapped in plastic, from the

Why I need to work on my accent

From The Bold Soul, 1 year ago, Similar articles

So I'm enjoying this amazingly gorgeous and unusually sunny April Saturday in Paris, wandering a fantastic antiques fair in the 9th arrondissement on Avenue Trudaine (still there through Sunday 10th of April if you're interested, metro Anvers on line 2 will get you right there), with my friend Linda. After an hour or so of looking at old trunks, antique dishes and armoires, and hat pins (I bought one to add to my collection and was shocked at how cheap they were compared to prices for same in...

iPhone 97/365: Periwinkle, a photo by rethought on Flickr. My mother had this planted in the front garden when I was small. There was also a birch whose bark I longed to peel. It's odd what small things you remember and throw you right back to childhood.

A Mid-Winter Night's Feast

From 2 Baci in a Pinon Tree, 1 year ago, Similar articles

The preparations started days before. A truckload of sand was mounded in the piazza. Then, for an entire day great logs were conveyed through the streets on a squeaking, suffering tractor. They were painstakingly stacked on the dirt so that, in the end, the teepee of tree trunks reached up one story high. Old men stood beholding the scene and discussing how the bonfire would be bettered if they'd
