Wellbeing: How Women Expats Can Achieve It
Here are some tips to help you attain that state of wellbeing which is imperative for you to deal with everything on your list…
• Eat Healthy
Cook healthy by grilling or baking food instead of deep frying it; find healthy cooking alternatives for traditional and contemporary food and keep off saturated fats and red meat.
Eat regularly and on time. No matter how busy you are don’t skip meals. Go for whole wheat bread and bakery products or brown rice. A rich source of calcium, enjoy your dairy products but opt for low fat.
Local cuisines incorporate food products that are suited to the climatic conditions prevalent there while making optimum use of the locally available produce; observe and use them accordingly.
• Exercise and Relaxation
Some form of relaxation like yoga, breathing exercises or meditation for a few minutes every day will help you stay calm and balanced. Any form of sport, art or music can assuage any feelings of anger, anxiety or depression that you may be experiencing. It will also help you direct your energy towards some creative pursuit.
Indulge in some “me” time everyday and don’t let anyone intrude on it. Read, paint or simply do nothing…it is entirely your call. Getting a new look, shopping or a visit to the spa once in a while help you look good and feel good.
• Bonding and Networking
No matter how independent we think we are, we all need people to support us from time to time. Your family and friends are there to help you whenever the need arises. Simply having someone to talk to about your concerns is a big step towards feeling lighter. If your family moves with you, then your support system is right there in your home. If not, then a calling card to speak with your family and friends is a small investment that you will have to make.
Joining an expat group group helps in social networking and adding to your knowledge with tips on traveling, hospitals, shopping and so on.
• Don’t be Afraid to Seek Help
If you have trouble coping with life abroad, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. Sometimes depression can be serious and you will need clinical treatment which your friends and family cannot provide. A counselor or a psychologist has the training and experience to help you so go ahead and ask for it.
• Associate With a Cause
Serving the less fortunate among us is a great way of making a difference to the world that we live in. Teaching at the community centre, reading to the blind or elderly, working with orphans or terminally ill patients and helping women who are victims of physical and mental abuse are all some ways in which you can serve others.
Bonding with people, discussing your problems and getting involved with some activity other than your work…try them to see the difference!
