Poem for today

From Gweipo , 3 days ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

A friend was complaining bitterly on FB the other day.  Her teenaged son was being made to memorize tracts from "The Tempest" by his English teacher.  In the chorus of sympathy and commiseration by her friends I was the only dissenting voice.  I suggested memorization was not a bad thing for children.  I remember in my high school years memorizing a lot of Shakespearean speeches, paragraphs from the set work novels, poems, sonnets, and since I was still god-fearing and going... Beauty and marketing

From Gweipo , 4 days ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Sometimes it is possible to get things just horribly wrong.  My dear children and husband gave me the luxury of a facial yesterday morning as a mother's day gift.  90 minutes of pampering (I can't remember when last I had a facial).  It was great.  But then after, the beautician sat me down and did the hard sales talk on me.  Was I aware that I had wrinkles.  Well, duh, shock horror, I'm 46, if I didn't there would be something rather un-natural about the matter.... Jog-A-Thon at LIS

From de kooijtjes, 4 days ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

This Saturday the Luanda international school (LIS) organized her first annual charity Jog-A-Thon. All proceeds went to Irma Dominguez's orphanage in nearby Viana to help the orphanage purchase land and expand their existing facility. The children that live at the orphanage were also participating. Seeing them together with the LIS students brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes. I couldn't help thinking how different their lives must be. Read more

Mollie Makes visits my tea house.

I recently friended a UK based American expat named Leigh who was visiting Paris on a extended trip. We hit it off from the start. She has a cute blog and an even cuter daugheter named Lois who Maximilien took a liking to immediately. Lois doesn't speak French but that didn't keep her from making fast friends with Max. You would never believe the conversations these two had a mismash of French and English and lots of laughing and wrestling. Lois can keep up with the boys for sure. No... Read more

Normal vs. natural vs. I know not what

From Gweipo , 5 days ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I've been meaning to blog on this subject for a while, and the whole Time magazine breast issue has kind of pushed the imperative. The whole idea started when I was reading Robb Wolf's "The Paleo Solution" he brings up the question of what we consider to be normal viz a viz eating, weight, sleep etc. and suggests most logically what every parent on earth will at least once have told their children "just because "everyone" is doing it, that doesn't make it right".  In fact a whole ton of... Dear children, just please don't give me pink eye for mother's day

From Life is Good, 5 days ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Anything I'd hoped to achieve the past week has completely gone out the window. I mentioned in the last post that D came down with Hand Foot and Mouth disease. He had a pretty mild case... but a few days later Quinn came down with it, too, and has had a harder time of it (poor thing still has blisters on his hands, feet, and butt, though thankfully his mouth hasn't seemed to bug him much).  Then on Wednesday, when I'd planned on D going back to school, he woke up with pink eye which has... les Enfants Rouges

From Frenchless in France, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

There is an old covered market in the Marais called les Enfants Rouges-an old orphanage had children who wore red, thus the name. Not only do they sell vegetables, it is ringed with little restaurants so you can eat there. Over one of the entrances. The interior of the market. A view of one of the places to eat. Tagine meals seemed to be the most popular along with a Japanese place. I didn’t get this but thought it looked so colorful. This was in a nearby street. It’s... Read more

My Middle Child

From Expat Mom, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Dante was thrown violently into the position of middle child when Dominic was born and I think most middle children are resentful of the fact that they were once the baby. However, when Dante met Dominic one on one in the hospital and Dominic grabbed his finger, it was head over heels love. I kept waiting for him to get jealous and angry about the new baby . . . but it didn’t happen. He still loves Dominic just as much as that first day, if not even more, and he is constantly snuggling... Read more

Luanda from the roof of the Maianga building

From de kooijtjes, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I was on my way home from the grocery store, stuck in a traffic jam. Rob called me to come to his office as soon as possible to bring Maarten's and my passport. As our ordinary visa is about to expire soon we need to arrange residency visa. Considering the time of the year this is quite inconvenient. The school year ends June 8th and then most moms and children will leave for their home country. Now our application is submitted our passports are therefore unavailable until the visa process is...
