Taxes and Toilets

From Ya' All Right?, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

A bit of a warning - I've ranted about taxes before (quite a few times, I believe) and I'm about to do it again.  It's tax time, and that stinks doubly bad when you're an expat.  Thank goodness for KPMG, as I would never be able to do my taxes on my own.  Not only are they long and complicated, but because I'm an expat, I'm unable to file Federal taxes on-line.  That means a trip to the post-office, one of my least favourite things to do.  How long is the return' ... when you have to pay, you file on the last day

From Mama(e) in Translation, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Last year I made a mistake when filling my W-4 form and I somehow claimed too many allowances (5!), so I only paid about 1% of federal tax and we had to pay over 1K. I already fixed the W-4 and hopefully that won't happen next year. Since we had to pay, K filed our taxes Sunday night and the money was withdrawn from our account yesterday. The good thing is that we're getting about 800 back from the state, so we'll be almost even. Phew!I hope not to have to pay again anytime... Read more

Almost 10 years in the Netherlands: Looking back to the things I hated much

From The Dutched Pinay, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

This August I turn 10 years in the Netherlands. Looking back I must say that I have come a long way. I am living the life now that I envisioned when I first came here. My first few years in this country was not an easy walk in the park though. It was those years that I almost gave up. On many things, and I had many chances as well. One of the facts of life living and working in the Netherlands: the high taxes. In this advert, it states that March 32 does not exist, which means people need to... Read more

Ghesm Island, Iran

From The Foreigner, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Flying from Shiraz to Ghesm showed amazing lines of dry mountains and winding riverbeds slowly turn into drastic cliffs and scrubby desert. We landed and were impressed by the tourist information booth ('Seven wonders of the Persian Gulf') and the on site diving incubator! We joined the swarm for a taxi, finally getting in one, we pondered how much it would cost as there was no meter. How hard to bargain' Then we saw that it was 45km to town and were glad we hadn't asked as it would probably... Read more

Sketch diary: it's harder than I thought

From I was really just very hungry, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I am two and a half weeks into a six week course of radiation therapy, to zap the remaining cancer cells in my body. The course I am doing now is the type where a highly localized beam is aimed at my abdomen from all sides of my body. Every weekday, an ambulance-taxi, or The Guy, drives me to the radiotherapy clinic in Avignon, which is about an hour away from where we live, and back. Each session lasts about 10 minutes, and is completely painless. It’s the side effects that are the... Read more

What's the Honduran government's cut of your travel costs'

From La Gringa's Blogicito, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Often we have vague discussions about Honduras and I am compelled to see just what exactly the law or constitution say on the matter. It is frequently very difficult to find a law unless you know the name or number of the law, and when you find it, it's hard to know if a later law may have revised or eliminated it. But I like detective work, so I usually persevere. ;-)The following events set me on the detective trail:A law was passed in December 2011 to increase the airport departure tax from... Read more

Update, January 9: President Lobo has just announced that he is suspending the sanction of this decree pending review. Taxes For Me But Not For Thee'

From What Do I Know?, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Tax Day (in the US) is almost upon us. And in both the US and the UK there's been a lot of news about millionaires and their taxes'or lack of them.  Here in the UK, Chancellor George Osborne has recently discovered that lo, very rich people don't pay much in taxes! They hire accountants to find tax loopholes, sometimes disguised as charitable deductions, to avoid paying the rates that lesser mortals do. According to the BBC, "The Daily Telegraph reported that a study by HM... Read more

From Bugigangas, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Finally, I can present to you the elephant head project! One of my most popular posts, at least keyword search-wise, was on Fake Taxidermy. It took me a year, but I finally DIY-ed this project, just in time to see my office become more of a nursery than a writer's haven. Oh, well.
