The Expat Unfriendly Netherlands - Take Two

From A Letter from the Netherlands, Yesterday, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Not all Dutch things are easy to adapt to(c) Amanda van MulligenAround a year ago I published a blog post which threw up the question whether the Netherlands was a friendly place to live for expats. The resounding response was no. And it was the most commented on post I have written - with comments still coming in.It seems that most of you indicated that making friends with Dutch people is nigh on impossible. That Dutch people are very closed off (to expats) and that the local language is a... Read more

The Bee @ Publika

From New Life in KL!, Yesterday, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Today we made the wrong choice. After a good lunch at Rakuzen Publika, we went to The Bee (at the far end of Publika, close to a Carpark entrance/ exit). The place was packed. Music was too loud. Plus points- had sofa, and mix of benches, tables, chairs which made it "homey"- Lots of people, maybe food is good' Many expats and locals alike- waitress changed the ultra-hardened old red velvet slice. We ordered a cupcake and instead she came with the wrong order. We gave it a go and was shocked... Read more

Curious Find

From Snooker in Berlin, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Expats have a tendency to miss those "little things" from home. When I first got to Germany it became obvious that I would need to research and find new shampoo, different deodorant, dental floss, etc. And that was just in the bathroom. In the case of some items, I ended up finding a product/brand which was better than what I was replacing. But when it came to others, I had to settle for something I didn't really like as much as what I'd left back home. Never have I found dental floss which is... Read more

First days

From de kooijtjes, 2 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

My first days here in the compound were no sorrows, neither fun rather boring. I had a car and a driver but where should I go. I'm more interested in the local life than in the expats-proof locations but should I risk going out on my own already' If only I could get on line! But internet can be very challenging here in Angola! Sad to say, but without the internet I'm pretty much lost. One day at the pool we met a very nice couple who are coincidentally moving back to the States. They were... Read more

Grocery store blooper

From de kooijtjes, 3 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Loud rhythmic music and all the usual chaos at the supermarket checkout. The cashier hands me the receipt and change in 5-Kwanza bills. I glance at my receipt and I notice that there are 10 Kwanza less. Full of confidence in my Portuguese I tell her that she should give me the proper change. She refuses with a loud laugh and yells at the others cashier ladies with sarcasm: dez Kwanza! Some other expats are smiling at me with compassion. I get irritated and insist on getting the change back... Read more

And I'm going to WIN my division.  No, I'm going to Slaughter  my division.  Middle-aged Canadian Expats moms walking 100K (metric century) with their dog.  NO'  THIS IS SO COOL!  OK, here's the plan:  walking 100K - yup.  Raising money for a good cause, in fact this right now for me is the best cause. Integration, Part 2

From Suzer's Expat Adventures, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

The other day it was suggested to me that I shouldn't allow locals to join the Expats in Adelaide group.  I hesitate to even post this, to be honest, as I don't want to risk anyone not joining on this basis.  It was a one off and to me, bizarre complaint, which ended in my apologising to the person that the group was too inclusive for her, at which point she removed her membership and advised me she'd be letting people know how awful I am.Then this morning, I got an email from an... So what's it like living in Athens at the mo'?

From Not so desperate yugowife, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

So what's it like living in Athens at the mo'? Well, first of all we are expats, we live in the northern suburbs in a very residential and privileged area so we don't see much poverty around here and we have not been caught up in demonstrations as long as we have kept out of the centre of town.We have been mildly affected by the strikes - mainly the post office, public transport but the worst by far was when the garbage was not picked up for weeks last autumn. We do see the odd person... Read more

From My Life In Singapore, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

This blog post (below) was written in July 2009, when I had to say goodbye to my friend Susan. Since then I have said countless goodbyes.... none of them being any easier. It is hard for each and everyone of us, people that have not been 'expats' will never have the understanding of what it is like to be constantly saying GOODBYE.  As expats we make short and very intense relationships wherever we may be living, they may not be 'life long friends' from our school days, but they are equally...
