Catching up: parties, applications, surgeries

Today is effectively the very first day of my "summer vacation 2012" -  3 months of not much work & no paycheck. I didn't have a paycheck for 5 years before this, but somehow now that I'm back to the "workforce" (though still working in the margins), it does bother me a lot not to have a salary in the next months. Sigh...Next year I will have it for at least a month when I teach for the study abroad in Brazil which reminds me that I do have to work this summer planning that. And I... Read more

Morocco - Assault on the Senses

From AMSTERDAMNED, 5 days ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Our overland trip from Marrakesh to Lisbon started with an explosion on our senses the moment we arrived in Casablanca and made our way to Marrakech. The smells, the sounds, the sights were all different, chaotic and overstimulating. Morocco was the first country truly outside my cultural bubble and the culture shock I felt was as claustrophobic as the narrow covered streets within the Medina walls.  After working our way overland into Spain we were exhausted, exhausted from ... Sisters Working Together

From Here There and Everywhere, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

We have a mission, and that I why I am in Seattle. My sisters and I have to clean out my Mother’s condo, now that she has moved to a very elegant new living situation, with a lot of people her own age to play with. Mom has talked about this for years, but always with concern that when it came to dividing things up among the sisters there may be some greed, or that we might come to blows over the division of the possessions she is not taking with her. She came up with a system, whereas we... Read more

Home renovation work in Kenya - and the rain keeps on falling

From Africa Expat Wives Club, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I think that it is fair to say that we are currently living 'in extremis'. Persistent Rain in Kenya - readers currently experiencing flooding in UK can sympathise! As I sat working on my computer this morning, in the small room which is now doubling up as one daughter's garret style bedroom, while needing a wee fairly desperately after my second cup of coffee ? I wondered where on earth I might go to the loo. I had already headed out to a 7am exercise class,... Read more

The perfect tribute to Václav Havel : the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent

From Empty Nest Expat, 2 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

The Goddess of Democracyfrom Tiananmen Squarecirca 1989Václav Havel and the Czechs inspired my 'Empty Nest Expat' adventure. I knew people who could elect a playwright as President were different in a way I couldn't define than me and my countrymen. The Czech Republic seemed like such a delightfully highbrow learned society. I wanted to learn all about the Czechs by moving overseas and seeing what they were like.To this day, I'm inspired by Václav Havel. This week, I... Read more

I realise I never shared why and how we ended up leaving California.Back in October Stuart started feeling like the Chiropractic school he was attending wasn't working for him - too much philosophy and not enough science, conspiracy theories being taught as fact (you mean you didn't know the chalky trails planes leave in the sky are actually chemicals that the government are crop dusting us with'), tuition going up but there was nothing to show for it, narrow minded classmates soaking up the... romantic ideal dashed ...

I'm off to Europe with the kids this summer.  Yup, I join the scores of other women this year with husbands "home" working and mums off with the kids.  How did that happen'  Let's say the Europeans are far more sensible and generous in their annual leave than certain other nations.  We were spoilt for 18 years and it's payback time.So part of the plan is to let the kids get some cultural and language immersion in the land of their passport, while I doodle down to Switzerland...
